"But he was such a caring person."As a girl and younger woman, Jen Huffman was active in gymnastics, both as a participant and later as a coach. But after her son took up rowing, she decided to take a learn to row class with some of the other mothers. Lake Stevens is such a great place to row. You can see the sun rising over the mountains and fish jumping out of the water. It's just very tranquil. It's also fantastic exercise, and for me that's a big part of it. I've always been a very active person and it's something that keeps me active."But there's also the competitive aspect of it that really drew me into it. "It's a really fun sport and a way to be active. I have a lot of friends, too. Being on the team is a way to meet people."Had her grandfather lived another few years, "I think he would've been very excited to know that I was (rowing) and that Dana was doing it, too," Jen Huffman said. "It was a huge part of his life for four years, and I just wish I would've asked him more about it when he was alive. Because he did some incredible things."
'The Boys in the Boat'
"The Boys in the Boat," written by Daniel James Brown, chronicles the University of Washington varsity crew that won the gold medal representing the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
The book, which has spent several weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list, gives particular attention to Joe Rantz, who lived much of his "Achat Anabolisant Belgique" adult life in Lake Forest Park before his death in 2007.
Rantz was the grandfather of Jen Huffman and the great grandfather of Dana Huffman, both of Mill Creek and both members of the Lake Stevens based North Cascades Crew.
